About
Conwy Castle built by Edward 1st during his conquest of Wales is according to UNESCO, one of the finest examples of a medieval castle in Europe. The castle was built between 1283 and 1287 and designed by James of St George, the master builder of Edward 1st.
The castle and its surviving town walls are a fine example of a medieval town; the castle boasts 8 circular turrets and the town walls were built to protect the castle on its weakest side. It is believed that Edward 1st stayed in Conwy Castle in 1294 during the Welsh uprising led by Madog ap Llywelyn.
Now in the care of CADW, the castle and its town walls provide some of the best views of Conwy town and the surrounding area. The drive over the bridge into the town of Conwy is probably one of the best entrances you can make into a town in the whole of North Wales.
