About
Founded by St Deiniol 1,499 years ago, we've been a cathedral for longer than anywhere else in the UK. Bangor Cathedral has been here through almost a millennium and a half of Welsh history, from being the burial place of Welsh princes to a home for some carved wooden mice. We've been destroyed by Vikings more than once and rebuilt by a man who never set foot in the place!
Nowadays, our cathedral is one of the most historic buildings in North Wales, and is still being used for the purpose it was built. The Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym praised the musical tradition of St Deiniol's Cathedral in the 1300s, and you can still here the choir singing evensong - completely free - on Sunday and selected afternoons midweek.
We're open from 10am most days, earlier on Sundays. Join us for a service, enjoy the music of our choir and regular Thursday recitals, walk around and explore the building...... or just sit and have a moment's peace and reflection. Our ancient stone walls are great for shutting out the noise of the city, and the cares of the world: stop, breathe and be still.
