About
The Wrexham Lager Beer Company Ltd is the Uk’s oldest existing lager brewery, situated in Wrexham, North Wales, and can trace its history back to 1882.
The original brewery was set up by German immigrants, Ivan Levinstein and Otto Isler and later run by Robert Graesser. In the 19th century, Wrexham Lager was found in the top hotels and gentleman’s clubs in London, also sold in Harrods and Selfridges and exported across the globe, famously served on the ill-fated Titanic.
The brand’s exports decreased during World War II, leading to its purchase by Ind Coope, and later Carlsberg-Tetley. Carlsberg closed the original brewery in the early 2000’s, which it later demolished, with only the brewery building remaining.
In 2011, a local family revived the brand, using the same ingredients from an older recipe of the original lager, former Wrexham Lager Head Brewer, Ian Dale and microbiologist and former MP for Clwyd South, (who had bought the Wrexham Lager rights), Martyn Jones, recreated the magic!
The Roberts family invested their money building a state-of-the-art, German engineered brewery and Wrexham Lager was made available again on the 29th of October 2011.
The brewery produces three award winning lagers, Wrexham Lager 4%, Wrexham Premium Pilsener 4.6% and Wrexham Export Lager 5%.
In 2023, the Roberts family appointed CEO James Wright, who has overseen rapid UK growth, as well as international expansion into Australia and Scandinavia, with planned distribution in the US and Canada.
On the 30th of October 2024, the Wrexham Lager Beer Company Ltd announced Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds as new co-owners alongside the Roberts family. The acquisition was made by Red Dragon Ventures LLC, a joint venture formed by The R.R. McReynolds Company LLC (which is co-owned by McElhenney and Reynolds and is the majority owner of Wrexham Association Football Club) and the Allyn family of Skaneateles, New York. Red Dragon Ventures was created to drive growth in the Wrexham community and Wrexham AFC.
