According to a recent BBC News article, we are receiving international recognition for our sustainability initiatives in the tourism industry, with Lonely Planet naming us one of the world's most sustainable destinations to visit this year!

Our commitment to sustainability is everywhere you look. Take, for instance, John Whitehead, owner of an eco lodge in the picturesque Eryri National Park, also lovingly known to us as Snowdonia. For the past 25 years, he has tirelessly worked to turn his guest house into a beacon of eco-friendly hospitality, adding insulation, solar panels, and even a heating system that runs on cat litter.

However, strides toward sustainability aren't only taking place in our accommodation options. Local influencers like Sarah Jayne, boasting over 40,000 Instagram followers, are actively encouraging their audiences to explore the less-known natural gems of our country instead of the overcrowded hotspots. Emphasising the beauty of 'unexplored' locations like the Clwydian Range, Sarah echoes the sustainable tourism mantra - leave no trace.

These efforts are tied to a growing demand for sustainable tourism both at home and abroad. A recent YouGov poll indicated that 35% of UK adults, and even more young people, seek to travel more sustainably. Globally, this number jumps to an impressive 53%.

Our aim at North Wales Tourism is not simply promoting the stunning landscapes Wales has to offer. We share a vision with dedicated individuals like John Whitehead, aiming to interweave our love for the three pillars of sustainability - environment, economy, and community - into the heart of our tourism strategies.

That’s why we are ecstatic that the Welsh Government is supporting our endeavours, aiding local businesses in becoming more sustainable, and providing resources for the implementation of more public transport and active tourism solutions. The recent £20m future proofing fund will undoubtedly go a long way to help businesses continue to be more sustainable, and we can't wait to see the outcomes!

This is not just wonderful news for those of us in the tourism industry, but for all who love and value the unparalleled natural beauty of Wales. We will continue to work alongside government bodies, local businesses, and our passionate Wales-lovers to develop a sustainable future for tourism that protects our stunning landscapes for generations to come.

Enjoy Wales! Sustainably.
