Beavers in Wales
Welcome to the Welsh Beaver Tourism Toolkit, guiding you with information, images and resources to help promote the reintroduction of beavers in North Wales!
The Importance of Beavers in the Welsh Ecosystem
Beavers are a vital component of the Welsh ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining its health and balance. Once abundant in Wales, beavers faced extinction in the 16th century due to hunting and habitat loss. The Welsh Beaver Project, launched in 2014, aims to restore beavers as a natural part of the ecosystem, benefiting rivers, biodiversity, and flood control. Thanks to the dedicated conservation efforts of the NWWT, beavers are slowly making a comeback in Wales.
One of the most significant ecosystem services beavers provide is habitat creation. By damming streams and creating wetland habitats, beavers offer critical homes for amphibians, fish, birds, and mammals. These habitats also contribute to water quality maintenance, water flow regulation, and soil erosion prevention, particularly valuable in mitigating flooding and drought concerns in Wales.
Benefits of Beavers to Tourism
Beavers' impressive engineering skills, showcased through their dam and lodge building, have turned them into a major attraction for nature enthusiasts, and tourists worldwide.
Beavers' dams and lodges also present an opportunity for environmental education and conservation awareness. Visitors can learn about the importance of wetland ecosystems, their benefits for wildlife habitats, and how to support their conservation.
By attracting tourists, beavers contribute to local conservation efforts by promoting responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.
We invite businesses and individuals to explore the resources in this toolkit, which aim to enable you to promote beavers as a sustainable and enriching tourist attraction in Wales. Together, let's celebrate the return of beavers and their positive impact on Wales' beautiful ecosystem and communities.
